Course Description

Academic Year 2017-2018 • Grade 11 and above • Science Sequence

For reference only; see current year course listing for course availability and details.

Honors/AP Chemistry

Meeting times for this course will be available in February, 2016. If you are interested in this course and have time constraints, please notify the instructor as soon as possible.

AP/Honors Chemistry builds on concepts of matter acquired in junior high or basic chemistry, covering more advanced concepts in atomic structure, electron configuration, the nature of chemical bonds, aspects of acid-base and precipitation reactions, simple solution preparation, chemical equilibria, ane energy. Additional topics may include organic chemistry, biochemistry, and the characteristics of chemical families, depending on student interest. Students must complete three safety checkout labs and 19 lab exercises to receive AP credit. Student who complete fewer labs than required for AP credit but satisfactorily complete all other work may receive honors credit for the course.

In 2014, the College Board revised requirements for the AP Chemistry course and exam preparation. This course has been updated and certified to meet or exceed all syllabus requirements, including lab work, for AP Chemistry. Students completing this course satisfactorily will be prepared to take the SAT II and/or AP Chemistry examinations.

This course is taught using the Scholars Online Chat software, which allows the teacher to embed graphics, mathematical equations, and movies in the chat session, with complete logging available for the entire year. Audio software is not used to allow students with limited internet access to participate fully, and to encourage precise thinking and writing skills.

Prerequisites

Students should have completed a first year algebra and a year geometry course or their equivalent, and be taking a second year algebra course. They must be able to factor algebraic expressions and be able to solve the quadratic equation. Use of scientific notation and logarithmic expressions will be covered during the course. See the Teacher's website for more details.

Recommended background

A junior high school level course in physical science is highly recommended. Students without a basic chemistry course should also have completed either ScholarsOnline Natural Science Year II, Biology, or Astronomy, or their equivalent.

Teacher's notes:

Attendance at three weekly sessions is required for all students. Two sessions will cover textbook materials and homework assignments. The third session will cover lab work and specific preparation for the AP examination in May, 2017.

Textbooks and Materials

This item is required:

Chemistry and Chemical Reactivity - Hardcover [Edition or Version: 9], Authors: John C. Kotz, Paul M. GTreichel, John Townsend, David Treichel

ISBN: 1133949649

Publisher's website: Chemistry and Chemical Reactivity - Hardcover

Best sources: Scholars Online Bookstore

Other information: The hardcover, softcover, and eBook versions of the ninth edition include all materials required for the course. This edition has been out for several years and should be widely available used. Because the HYDRID edition does not include homework problems and does require additional fees for OWL access, we do not recommend it for this course. No OWL access will be required for the 2017-2018 SO Chemistry course.

This item is required:

Illustrated Guide to Home Chemistry Experiments [Edition or Version: 1], Authors: Robert Bruce Thompson

ISBN: 0596514921

Publisher's website: Illustrated Guide to Home Chemistry Experiments

Best sources: Scholars Online Bookstore

Other information: We will use this text as the basis of our chemistry lab efforts.

This item is recommended but not required and its use is optional:
