As You Like It
2009-10: Thea Sharrock
This is one of the earlier ones from the sequence being produced by the Globe Theatre in London: it is aimed at recreating the original experience of seeing the play in its first context. The audience is in view and conspicuously involved in the experience. Sets are virtually non-existent; costumes and other props are basic but well-crafted. Like other members of the set, it has a genuine appeal.
The acting throughout is very solid; actors are to some extent visibly playing to the audience and occasionally mugging for the experience. Different viewers react to this differently, but if you’re receptive to this kind of thing, it’s as well done as you’re likely to find. The lead roles are all played very well, and the supporting roles lend genuine support throughout. It’s perhaps an acquired taste, but it’s one worth acquiring.
