Latin and Greek National Exams
American Mathematics Competitions
FERPA Policies

Scholars Online encourages its students to enter national competitions to receive honors for their mastery of classical languages, mathematics, modern languages, and science. A number of Scholars Online students have won both recognition and scholarships through these competitions.

National Latin Exam, National Greek Exam

The National Latin Exam and National Greek Exam are offered each year through the American Classical League. These exams provide opportunities for homeschooled students to receive recognition for their accomplishments, and allow them to compete for scholarships provided by the American Classical League. Scholars Online students have excelled in these examinations, winning successive gold and silver awards in Latin, high and highest honors in the Greek exam, and even the Greek Scholarship.

Registration is now open for exams offered through the American Classical League Student Exam webpage, which includes instructions for homeschoolers. Latin students can register to take exams in classical mythology or etymology, Roman civilization, Latin vocabulary, and of course, the Latin language itself. Registration deadlines vary, and while most deadlines are in January 2026, the etymology exam deadline is October 25, so if you are interested in that exam, check the website link now.

The 2025-2026 National Latin Exam itself is offered at eight levels and you may take it either on paper or online. Early administration dates are available with students who have conflicts with the regular administration dates. For 2025-2026, there are no special instructions for homeschool students (NLE for Homeschooled Students page); you need simply register for the online examination. Deadline for registration for paper exams is January 23, 2026, and February 13, 2026 for online exams.

Students achieving gold medal levels in the Intermediate Latin, Intermediate Reading, Advanced Prose, Advanced Poetry, and Advanced Reading Comprehension exams in their senior year of high school are eligible to apply for one of sixteen $2000 scholarships, renewable for each year the student continues to study Latin in college.

Registration is also open for the 202-2026 National Greek Exam and the National Hellenic Civilization Exam, to be administered in late February-early March, 2026. Registration must be completed by January 15, 2026 for the Greek exam, and by January 25, 2026 for the Hellenic Civilization exam. Students can choose from among several exams depending on their level of experience. Students with special circumstances (including homeschool students) should contact the Greek Exam Chair at greekexam@aclclassics.org for instructions on ordering and participating in the examination. Students achieving purple or blue ribbons in the Homeric and Attic Greek examinations may apply for a $2000 scholarship to continue their Greek studies in college. Check the American Classical League website at the National Greek Exam page to get more information, descriptions of the syllabus covered by each exam, past exam samples, preparation guidelines, and to order copies of the exam.

We strongly urge all students of Latin and Greek to participate in these examinations to receive credit for their hard efforts!

American Mathematics Competition

The AMC competitions are sponsored each year by the Mathematical Association of America. Like the AP exams, these are usually administered through local schools, colleges, universities, and learning centers, although they may also be sponsored by math clubs. Homeschool students must register their homeschool and identify an acceptable examination site (public libraries are a possible site), or arrange to take the exam at a participating educational organization. The list of 2024-2025 centers is a good starting point for finding a school offering the exam.

Three levels of exams are offered; student eligibility is determined by grade and age. AMC 8 is a 40-minute, 25-question exam designed for grades 8 and below. AMC 10 is a 75-minute, 25-question multiple choice exam for students in grades 10 and below, and covers elementary algebra, basic geometry, and elementary probability. AMC 12 has the same format as AMC 10, but covers trigonometry, advanced algebra and advanced geometry. None of the exams includes calculus. The A and B versions of AMC 10 and AMC 12 are offered on different dates to accommodate test site schedules.

This year, the exams are offered as follows:

  • AMC 10A and AMC 12A on November 5, 2025
  • AMC 10B and AMC 12B on November 13, 2025
  • AMC 8 between January 22 and January 28, 2026.

For more information on AMC policies, see the MAA American Mathematics Competitions Policies page.

FERPA, COPPA, and Privacy Policies

We have put in place policies to help us comply with federal privacy laws and international regulations. One of the consequences of the FERPA law is that when a student turns 18, parents lose access to academic records. Moodle Mentor block access to student course work and parent Administration account access to transcripts must be revoked unless we have a signed release from the student on file.

We monitor student ages, and about three weeks before the month in which a student turns 18, we will send both the parent and the student a copy of the letter to sign, scan, and send back to us. If we do not receive permission, access will be terminated at the beginning of the month in which the student turns 18. We realize this can be a jolt if, as a parent, you expect access to records to help students prepare college applications, so please return these letters promptly!

Note that this policy applies also to students who are not currently enrolled in Scholars Online courses. If you need access to records that no longer appear on your account, please notify the Scholars Online Accounts office to request a release letter for your student to sign.
