Supporting your Non-Traditional Student

If you have a special student who doesn’t fit a normal classroom, you may find the flexibility you need, without sacrificing the quality of education, at Scholars Online.

While every Scholars Online course uses a set curriculum as a basis for scheduling, since this is necessary for any group undertaking where individuals must work together to reach a common goal, we do not view education as a group of students making lockstep progress through a checklist of activities. At Scholars Online our goal is to help students with different backgrounds, skill levels, arts or sports commitments, and learning challenges achieve course mastery by learning from each other as well as from their teacher. Our small classes and limited meetings allow teachers the flexibility to give individual students the time needed complete activities on their own schedule within general deadlines.

We have had students pursuing musical, theatrical, dance, and athletic careers whose classes, training, and performances make traditional school hours impossible to keep. We have taught students whose ongoing medical issues required frequent hospitalization or who whose medicine regimen disrupted concentration and made completing assignments to a set deadline impossible. We have had students with learning challenges such as dyslexia and ADHD who needed special attention or alternate forms of presentation to connect to ideas and course content. While we are not experts in special education, we do understand understand how frustrating different time demands and learning challenges play havoc with a set schedule.

Our teachers will work with parents to determine feasible goals for your student, aligned to individual education plans, and provide any reports and evaluations required by your family’s oversight organization. Teachers will, where possible, provide extra help outside class through email, chat, or video conference sessions. We can adapt presentation methods to accommodate students who struggle with text-only materials, and we can slide deadlines when necessary so that your student can achieve the skills to demonstrate course mastery.
