A short introduction to the history of science, chemistry, and the experimental method using the lectures given by Michael Faraday at the Royal Institute. Faraday is still widely regarded as one of the greatest experimental scientists of all time. Using his 1861 lectures presented to a juvenile audience as a starting point, we will explore some of the basic ideas of atomic theory, properties of solids, liquids, and gases, combustion reactions. and energy, and gain experience using the scientific method of experimentation and writing lab reports.

Prerequisites

Curiousity and a lively sense of humor.

This course is especially appropriate for students planning on taking Chemistry in the 2010 academic year.

There will be no class meeting on July 20, 2010.
